Finding Strength with a Faith Based Victor Mentality

Advocacy and Support- Coaching

Life’s journey is often marked by unexpected twists and turns, testing our resilience and challenging us to find purpose amidst adversity. My twin sons were diagnosed with autism in 2002 and my third son diagnosed in 2010. As the father of three remarkable children on the autism spectrum, my path has been uniquely challenging. Yet, in the face of these challenges, faith has provided a solid foundation. Faith is more than just a belief; it’s a lifeline that connects me to my true purpose I have been given to use my God given talents. Faith also instills hope in the darkest of moments.

Embracing Faith as the Foundation:

In moments of uncertainty and doubt, faith becomes the cornerstone that anchors us. Through prayer, reflection, and a deep connection to a higher power, I’ve found solace and strength. Faith reminds me that I am not alone on this journey, and that there is a divine plan at work. It empowers me to face each day with renewed courage and to approach my children’s challenges with a sense of grace and acceptance.

Shifting Perspectives:

The victor mentality is a transformative mindset that allows us to redefine challenges as opportunities for growth. Raising children on the autism spectrum often presents hurdles that may seem insurmountable, but by shifting perspective, I’ve learned to focus on the progress we make, no matter how small. Instead of fixating on limitations, we celebrate every achievement as a victory. This shift has allowed us to appreciate the uniqueness of our children and to view their journey through a lens of positivity and hope.

Turning Challenges into Triumphs:

Every child, regardless of their abilities, possesses unique strengths and passions waiting to be nurtured. By investing time, effort, and love, I’ve witnessed incredible progress in my children’s development. From discovering their interests to achieving personal milestones, these triumphs are a testament to the power of determination and dedication. Each step forward reinforces the idea that with the right support and encouragement, there are no limits to what they can achieve.

Finding Purpose in the Journey:

Parenting children on the autism spectrum has expanded my understanding of purpose. It’s not just about providing care; it’s about advocating for inclusion, raising awareness, and fostering a more compassionate society. By sharing our family’s story, I hope to inspire others to embrace their challenges and channel them into meaningful change. This sense of purpose ignites a fire within me to advocate for a world where every individual, regardless of their abilities, is valued and empowered to reach their full potential.

Some overwhelming challenges revolve around the detailed routines they need to function and have a sense of control in their lives. Broken routines have lead to outbursts of yelling and aggression as well self-injurious behaviors (SIB). Understanding your child’s OCD and extreme need of routine may assist in providing the quality of life they need. On the other hand, you may also need to get your child out of the routine because they are in a do loop they cannot recover from and your intervention is what is needed. It’s up to you as their care giver to know these challenges and when to assist them so they do not get frustrated.

Cultivating Love and Gratitude:

Love is the driving force that fuels our journey. The unconditional love I receive from my children, despite their communication barriers, aggressive outbursts, and occasional SIB; they are a constant reminder of God’s grace. (NOTE: Healing is in the process which can be a long part of the journey in a society where we want it fixed right now). It’s a reminder that love transcends words and bridges the gaps that separate us. Gratitude amplifies this love, allowing us to cherish even the smallest moments of connection. The laughter, the shared experiences, and the quiet moments are extremely rewarding.

Life may appear unfair at first sight, but life, faith, a victor mentality, and the art of leveraging challenges have woven together a story of resilience, purpose, and unwavering love. This journey as a father in a family with my spouse and  three children on the autism spectrum has taught me that by embracing faith, shifting perspectives, turning challenges into triumphs, finding purpose, and cultivating love and gratitude, we can transform life’s obstacles into stepping stones toward a more meaningful and fulfilling existence. Every day, I am reminded of the infinite possibilities that lie within the intersection of faith and the human spirit, inspiring me to continue embracing the path laid out before me with hope, determination, and an unshakeable belief in the power of God’s plan.
